The traumas of life in Stoke Newington continue. As if it wasn't bad enough that we are now home to a sports centre that makes the Millennium Dome look like a shrewd use of public money, we are now having to deal with a full frontal assault on a much loved institution: the 73 bus.
The 73 is no normal bus, it' has it's own site and a dedicated blog. Personally, I remember it as the first bus I ever went on when visiting London from Liverpool
Part of the attraction is the fact that it runs almost entirely on elegant old Routemasters. But, all this is going to change.
They want to replace our lovely old Routemasters with horrible Bendy buses, where everyone has to stand up. Which is about as bad a swap as you could do.
And, then they're going to put those advance-pay ticket machines at the bus stop that never work; and you won't be able to hop on and off between stops.
Stoke Newington is, as you would expect, in a state of outrage (well, not quite everyone). There's an excellent Save the 73 website, with plenty of info about how to campaign and detailing what's wrong with the bendies (including the fact that they cause chaos for cyclists).
If the routemasters have to go, let's have nice new double deckers. Lots of them, running regularly.
Someone reads me!
